Former PM Khaleda Zia has been sentenced to five years in jail in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. BANGLA TRIBUNE/Sazzad HossainThe High Court has once again deferred the hearing of an appeal by BNP chief Khaleda Zia over the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
On Monday, Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman scheduled July 12 for the hearings after Khaleda’s counsels pleaded for time.
It’s the third time the court deferred the hearings.
Khaleda’s counsels moved the motion to adjourn the hearing citing that the apex court is set to give its decision on July 12 over their two petitions seeking a review of its May 16 order that asked HC to hear and dispose of appeals in the case by July 31.
A former prime minister, Khaleda Zia is now serving a five-year jail term since Feb 8, when the trial court found her guilty of embezzling foreign donations made to the orphanage.
On Mar 12, the High Court granted a four-month bail to Khaleda. The Appellate Division, on May 16 upheld the bail order, which will expire on July 12.
The former prime minister filed a petition with the HC seeking an extension of the bail order.
