Outsiders will be no longer allowed to enter, roam around or hold any kind of activities on the Dhaka University campus without the authorities’ prior permission.
The decision, on security grounds and to ensure that academic activities are not hampered, came from a meeting of the Provost Committee, said Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani.
“Outsiders will have to take clearance from the university authorities to enter, roam around or hold any kind of programmes on the campus”, he told Bangla Tribune before adding the campus in only opened to its students.
A media release issued later in the day said that the authorities will seek the law-enforcement agencies’ help on the matter if needed.
It said the provost committee’s decision, from a meeting on July 5, came due to "untoward incidents over the quota reform movement".
The meeting also agreed to urge authorities of all residential halls to remain alert about the presence of any militant and extremist groups.
It also decided to remove anyone not enrolled as a student from the halls. Guests or guardians of students will also be not allowed to enter the university premises without permission.
Dhaka University campus had been the central site of protesters demanding reforms to quotas in civil service.
Following three days of protests in early April, when violence broke out on the campus and the vice-chancellor’s residence was vandalized, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced to abolish the entire system.
The protestors postponed demonstrations after the announcement but it resumed late last month after delays in an official order scrapping the quota system.
