Tanjim Akhter Mala, who sustained serious burn injuries as a miscreant threw acid on her, has died at a city hospital.
Sixteen-year-old Tanjim Akhter Mala and her 8-year-old sister Marzia came under an acid attack while they were sleeping at their home at Uttar Digholdi in Bhola’s Sadar upazila on May 15.
Mala was an A-grade student and Marzia is a student of class 2 of another local school.
They were admitted to local health complex. As the condition deteriorated, Tanjim was taken to the capital’s Acid Survivors Foundation facility on the next day. Then, she was referred to Metropolitan Hospital on Jun 29, followed by shifting to City Hospital on Jul 1.
Seven days after fighting for life, Tanjim breathed her last there on Saturday (Jul 7)
Speaking to Bangla Tribune over mobile, Acid Survivors Foundation Executive Director Selina Ahmed said “Tanjim left us behind around 9:30 failing our all efforts.”
“She had rights to live in this world but the horrific acid (attack) took her away,” a lamented Ahmed said.
Demanding justice to Tanjim, her mother Jannatul Ferdous said, “I want capital punishment to Apu who killed my daughter.”
“If you (the government) don’t hang him (the perpetrator) I myself will do the justice to my daughter,” said an angry Ferdous.
Ahmed said that the body will be taken to village where Tanjim will be laid to her eternal rest.
Police, however, detained the perpetrator Mohabbat Hawladar Apu a day after the incident, who confessed to have committed the crime before a court.
Acid attack is a commune means to victimize girls across Bangladesh, often caused by the activities related to having affairs.
