Located behind the Rupnagar police station in Mirpur's Section 7, the slum caught fire around 7:22pm on Friday (Aug 16).
As many as 20 firefighting units were working to douse the fire, Fire Service Central Control Room Duty Md Ershad told Bangla Tribune.

Assisted by Police, Rapid Action Battalion and Dhaka Water Supply And Sewerage Authority, as many as 115 firefighters are engaged in tackling the fire, he added.
According to witnesses, there were at least 500 shanties at the slum and most of the dwellers were away because of Eid-ul-Azha.
"The fire gutted all of the shanties before spreading to nearby buildings. A two-storied building, too, caught the fire," said one Sahabuddin.

It is still uncertain whether anybody fell trapped inside the building, he added.
Panicked by the fire, people of the area took to the street leaving their residences.
Locals were seen helping the fighters and law enforcement agencies' members to tame the flame.
Rupnagar police inspector Golam Rabbani said they have deployed "enough police personnel to ensure that everything remains under control.
"The Fire Service will be able to identify the exact cause of the fire. However, we have zero reports of any casualties so far," he added

MAYOR ATIQUL VISITS THE SPOT
Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam visited the spot around 10pm two hours after the fire broke out.
Officials concerned have been directed to arrange food for and shelter to the fire victims, the mayor told the reporters on the spot.
In addition to law enforcement agencies, a probe panel would be opened to find out the cause of the fire, Atiqul added.
