The three-year-old twins suffered from a rare embryological disorder affecting an estimated one in every five to six million births

Conjoined twins — Rabeya and Rukaya – who were born with joint heads, are now major risk-free after the eighth day of their successful operation in Dhaka's Combined Military Hospital (CMH).

The information came out during a press briefing, organized by CMH  on Saturday.

Commandant of CMH Brig Gen Taufiqul Hasan, Dr Samanto Lal Sen, Dr Habib E Millat, Maj Gen M Fashiur Rahman from DGMS spoke at the briefing. Hungarian doctors– Dr Andres Csokay and Dr Marcel– also spoke.

The 33-hour-long surgery, which separated their skulls and brains, ended on August 2, where more than a hundred surgeons and anaesthetists from home and abroad took part.

With the support of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Defenceless People Foundation (ADPF), an agency of the Hungarian government, the operation of conjoined twins was carried out.

Experts from Hungary, the Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute, the Heart Foundation, the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital, the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital and the Dhaka Shishu Hospital took part in the very intricate surgery.

Chief Coordinator of the Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute Dr Samanta Lal Sen coordinated the surgery.

The doctors mentioned that Rabeya and Rukaya, from the rural north-western district of Pabna, were stable after the final separation.

“Another surgery would be carried out after two to three months later,” the doctors said, adding that this type of joint work would strengthen the bilateral relations between both the countries.
