Six to die for burning woman alive for dowry

In 2005, housewife Samina was burned alive in Dhaka’s Dhamrai Upazila.A court in Dhaka has awarded the death penalty to the husband and five others over the killing of a woman for dowry 13 years ago.

On Thursday, the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal No – 9 delivered the verdict with the husband Zafar in the docks.
The five other convicts, who have been tried as fugitives, are Jahangir, Abdur Rahim, Salek, Rokeya and Fela Mia, Prosecutor Shahid Uddin told Bangla Tribune.
According to court documents, Samina and Zafar were married on Jun 7, 2005, when the bride’s family paid a dowry of Tk 6,000 and promised to pay another Tk 10,000.
Around a month later, the convicts poured kerosene on Samina before setting her on fire. She was taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital later in the day and succumbed to the burn injuries hours later.
