A court in Dhaka has sentenced two people to life imprisonment for killing Sri Lankan citizen in the capital in 2004.
Judge Sheikh Hafizur Rahman of Dhaka Special Judge Court-9 handed the verdict on Wednesday (Aug 7).
The life term convicts are Mofiz Uddin Sarker alias Mofiz and Abu Zaher alias Zaher Khan.
The court also fined the convicts Tk 30,000 each and acquitted an accused, Abul Hossain, as the charges framed against his were not proved.
According to the case documents, Bangladeshi expatriate Jahirul Islam married Sri Lankan citizen Suhara Umma in Kuwait and they started living in Dhaka's Shaympur with their son.
On Jan 27, 2004, Jahirul’s tenant Abul Hossain’s brother-in-law Mofiz and his friend Zaher broke into Umma’s flat and strangled her to death.
Umma’s brother-in-law Abbas Ali filed the case with Shyampur police the next day and police charged three people over the killing.
The court then examined 12 of the 22 witnesses and came up with the judgement on Wednesday.
