Mandatory test before marriage to detect addiction/Thalassemia

Representational imageA writ has been lodged at the high court asking for mandatory drugs and Thalassemia tests for bride and groom before marriage.
On behalf of Supreme Court lawyer, Syeda Shahin Ara Laili, the writ was lodged by advocate Eklasuddin Bhuiyan at the relevant high court division.
The writ mentioned secretaries of cabinet, law, health, IG of police, DG of health department and DG of narcotics control as plaintiff.
If two persons afflicted with Thalassemia are married then the offspring may be born with deformities, the writ mentioned referring to opinion given by health specialists.
The writ also states that of the 70 lakh drug users of the country, 65 per cent are young and alludes to current statistics which underlines addiction as a major reason for rising in divorce.
Reportedly, many women complain of a variety of marital complications due to addiction.
If a medical certificate is made mandatory in addition to birth registration during marriage, the future generation will be saved from jeopardy, the writ added.
