Quota reformist leader Faruk HasanQuota reformist leader Faruk Hasan and two others have been sent to jail on Monday on charges of violence on the Dhaka University campus and attacking the vice-chancellor’s residence.

Earlier in the day, Faruk, a joint convener of the Council for the Preservation of General Students’ Rights, and two other leaders of the platform were handed over to the Shahbagh police by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists.

The trio was allegedly attacked by BCL activist while demonstrating at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka.
Faruk and the two others, Tarikul Islam and Jasim Uddin have been formally arrested in the police cases over violence on the campus in April.
They were produced before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Subtara Shuvo, when the police pleaded the suspects to be jailed until the investigation finishes.
According to case statement, the trio along with more a thousand students broke into the residence of Dhaka University Vice Chancellor in the wee hours of Apr 2.
Armed with iron rods, hokey stick, bamboos, they torched several motorcycles near the residence as well ransacked the house.
The Shahbag police started a case the next day over the incident.
Meanwhile, the Council said BCL Dhaka University unit leader Mehidi Hasna Sunny led the group, which attacked Faruk and whisked him away from Saheed Minar.
Sunny said, “In fact, I saved him from the mob’s wrath and handed over him to Shahbag police.”
“I have no knowledge of police action since then,” he added.
Students and job seekers have been protesting for several months, calling for reforms to the quota system for public sector jobs since April this year.
In a wake of their movement, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on Jun 28, said that a panel headed by the cabinet secretary would be formed.
One month later, the government has formed a seven-member committee led by the cabinet secretary over reforms to quotas in civil service on Monday (Jul 2).
The committee has been told to file its report within 15 working days.
According to the existing system, 56 percent posts in public service are reserved for different quotas, including 30 percent for children of freedom fighters, 10 percent each for women and particular districts, 5 percent for small ethnic groups, and 1 percent for people with disabilities.
