Two people have been killed in two separate incidents in Dhaka in what the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) described as shootout.

The incidents were reported from Badda around 2.30am and from Mirpur around 3.15am on Thursday (Jul 25), said RAB.

The deceased have been identified as 40-year-old Moharaj and 38-year-old Nazmul Hasan alias Benga Babu.

"Being tipped-off that some drug peddlers were hiding at Badda's Satarkul Panchkhola area, RAB conducted a drive in the area. As soon as RAB reached the area, the group of drug peddlers opened fire on them, prompting them to fire back in self defense which triggered the shootout," said RAB-1 Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kamruzzaman.

"Although other peddlers fled, Moharaj was caught in line of cross firing. He was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the doctor declared them dead," said ASP Kamruzzaman.

"3,000 yaba tablets, two firearms, some magazines and a mobile phone were seized from the scene," added the elite force official.

In the other incident, Nazmul Hasan was killed in a shootout at Beribadh area in Mirpur around 3.15am on Thursday, said RAB.

"Being tipped-off that some miscreants were hiding in the area, RAB conducted a drive in the wee hours on Thursday. As soon as RAB reached the area, the miscreants started firing on them. In retaliate, RAB had to fire back and Nazmul was caught in line of cross firing," said RAB-4 Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Sazedul Islam.

"He was taken to DMCH where the doctor declared him dead," said Sazedul before adding, "Some firearms were seized from the scene."
