BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia (Photo: Nashirul Islam)The High Court (HC) fixed Jul 3 for the hearing on the appeal filed by BNP Chairperson, Khaleda Zia, challenging the verdict of Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.
On the same day, the court will start the hearing of a plea by Anti-Corruption Commission, ACC, seeking an extension of Khaleda’s imprisonment in the case.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order on Sunday.
However, on that day there is another hearing on the appeal petition filed by two convicted persons, Kazi Salimul Huq Kamal and Sharfuddin Ahmed.
ACC counsel Khurshid Alam, was present at the court with Khaleda Zia’s legal counsels, advocate Jaynul Abedin, barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, barrister AHM Ehsanur Rhman and advocate Masud Rana.
We requested for the holding of hearings on both the appeals together, said ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam, adding: “the HC refused, asking us to move the hearing to extend imprisonment to the designated bench.”
However, the Chief Justice granted our prayer of having all the hearings, including that of two convicted persons, at the same time,” he added.
On Feb 8, the Special Judge's Court-5 of Dhaka convicted and sentenced Khaleda to five years’ imprisonment in a corruption case; she was then sent to old central jail at Nazimuddin Road in the capital.
