Khandaker Enamul Basir. File PhotoSuspended Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) director Khandaker Enamul Basir has skipped interrogation by the graft watchdog over bribery allegations in relation to suspended Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police Mizanur Rahman for the third time.
Basir was scheduled to appear at ACC's Segunbagicha office on Wednesday (Jul 17), but did not appear citing he had an ophthalmological operation, said his lawyer Kamal Hossain.
However, no comments have been passed from the ACC officials over the matter.
In the first two cases, ACC Director Sheikh Md Fanafillah, head of ACC inquiry committee to look into the matter, issued notice for Basir to appear which he skipped. The last and third time, ACC chief Iqbal Mahmud himself issued the notice to Basir.
Firstly, he was supposed to be quizzed on Jul 1, citing health issues for not appearing and on Jul 10, he didn’t appear citing security issues and fear of injustice.
Basir was suspended on Jun 10 for allegedly leaking information, a breach of job discipline.
According to a report run by a private TV channel, Enamul Basir, who was assigned to look into the corruption allegations against DIG Mizanur Rahman, took Tk 4 million as bribe from him with a promise to give him a clean chit.
Later, the ACC formed a three member inquiry committee with ACC Director Sheikh Md Fanafillah as its head to look into the matter.
After reviewing the committee's findings, the national anti-graft body suspended Basir on charges of illegally transmitting its data and violating the job discipline.
DIG Mizanur Rahman, former additional commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), was withdrawn in Jan 2018 following allegations of threatening a female news presenter of a private television channel.
Mizanur Rahman reportedly picked up a 25-year-old woman in Jul 2017 and forcibly married her.
