A general view of the Bangladesh Supreme Court. BANGLA TRIBUNE/file photoThe High Court has acquitted a woman and two others, who were sentenced to death by the trial court over the killing of the woman’s son 14 years ago.
Eighteen-month-old Dipjol was found dead in a pond next to his home at a village in Bagerhat’s Mollarhat Upazila on Apr 12, 2005.
In 2014, a Bagerhat court found the boy’s mother Latifa Begum, her boyfriend Monir Molla and Monir’s sister Nazma Begum guilty and awarded the death penalty to the convicts.
On Tuesday (Jul 9), the High Court bench of Justice Krishna Debnath and Justice Shahidul Karim scrapped the death reference and acquitted the three.
“The accused were acquitted as there was no witness and the statement from the plaintiff was confusing,” defence counsel Fazlul Haque Khan told the media after the hearing.
According to the case details, the boy’s body was found a day after he went missing in April 2005. In October the same year, the boy’s father Iku Biswas filed a murder case based on the autopsy report against the three.
Investigation revealed that Latifa, who was having an extramarital affair with neighbour Monir, was planning to marry him and conspired with Nazma to kill her son Dipjol.
Police submitted the charge sheet against the three in 2006 following the investigation and in April 2014 the court of Bagerhat sessions judge convicted the mother and her accomplices.
