Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon on Tuesday came down hard on the rickshaw pullers’ demonstration that caused severe traffic congestion on the city’s thoroughfares.
“Rickshaw has been banned on several major streets for the sake of the city dwellers. So, demonstrations that inflicted sufferings to millions of people are not acceptable,” he told the media after a programme at a Dhaka hotel on Tuesday (Jul 9).
The protests were triggered by a decision to ban rickshaws on three major streets of Dhaka.
Hundreds of vehicles were stranded and thousands of commuters were forced to walk when the rickshaw pullers blocked key streets in Tuesday morning.
“Everyone has the right to protest but not by disrupting people’s lives. We need to change the language and style of the protest,” he said.
The mayor said they would meet the rickshaw pullers “to resolve the issue.”
