Altaf took away crores from gullible people in the name of sending people to the USA. A person called Altaf Hossain came to a Mirpur shoe showroom and ordered shoes worth Tk. 38 lakh which piqued the curiosity of the manager and the showroom workers. Introducing himself as a US expat, the man told them that he has a restaurant and other businesses in the states and he is taking manpower from Bangladesh.
Saying that a fifty member group is going to the USA, he said that his current order of fifty pairs was for the group members.
At one point, Altaf Hossain, said that of the fifty-member group, three persons won’t be able to go since they have police cases so he needs three more persons.
When he told the store manager, Sheikh Fuad that for per person Tk. 50000 will be needed as first down payment, the latter expressed interest.
In several installments, Fuad gave Altaf Tk 570,000.
Then Altaf went missing for eight months. Altaf is a swindler and he is part of a ten member fraudster ring.
Altaf and his accomplices were arrested on Jul 3, confirmed Special Superintendant of Dhaka Metropolitan (south) police Md Kamruzzaman on Thursday (Jul 4).
He said that in the name of sending people to the USA, he took away crores from gullible people.
“This ring has hoodwinked countless people with the false promise of taking them to the USA; before convincing a target, they used to impress them with an aura of wealth and power by showing expensive cars, watches and shoes,” he said.
We are trying to arrest the reaming con artists of this group, he added.
