Dhaka’s Shahbagh police station has taken suspended deputy inspector general Mizanur Rahman into custody on Monday (Jul 1) following an order by the High Court.
Earlier in the day, the bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice SM Kuddus Zaman rejected his appeal for anticipatory bail on graft charges and ordered police to take him into custody.
Mizan has “totally tarnished the image of the police”, the court said during the hearing.
Later, an additional deputy commissioner of the police’s Ramna division and Shahbagh police OC Abul Hasan came to the High Court when the police were informed about the court’s decision.
Following the official procedures, the police officers took away Mizan in a car from the court premises to Shahbagh Police Station.
“An individual has to surrender before pleading for anticipatory bail. Since he [Mizan] turned himself in, the court can order jail for him and in that case, police have to send him to jail rather keeping him in their custody for 24 hours. The trial court will set a date for hearing after receiving the High Court’s order,” Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin told Bangla Tribune.
On Sunday (Jun 30), the suspended police officer filed the petition seeking anticipatory bail on charges of amassing illegal wealth.
The ACC on Jun 24 filed a case against him, his wife, brother and nephew accusing them of amassing illegal wealth.
DIG Mizan was scheduled to appear at the ACC headquarters on Monday, but he did not show up citing his “personal reasons”.
The anti-graft body summoned him to its headquarters to question him about Tk 4 million in bribes that he allegedly paid to ACC Director Enamul Basir.
Earlier, ACC Director Manjur Morshed filed the case with the ACC’s coordinated district office Dhaka-1.
The ACC found evidence of Mizanur’s illegal assets worth over Tk 30.7 million.
DIG Mizanur in a television interview recently claimed that Basir took the bribes from him promising that he would be given a clean chit.
Basir also divulged probe details during the investigation, according to ACC officials. Audio clips of mobile conversations between DIG Mizan and Basir were aired on television.
Earlier, DIG Mizanur was withdrawn from Dhaka Metropolitan Police as its additional commissioner when the allegation against him of abducting a woman and marrying her forcibly, despite having a wife and children, surfaced.
