FILE PHOTODeputy commissioners, who are in-charge of the district administrations, should quit if they fail to stop illegal sand extraction from rivers, says the High Court.
The bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader made the observation on Monday (Jun 17) while hearing plea over illegal sand extraction from Padma River in Rajshahi’s Talaimari area.
The court said deputy commissioners have sufficient powers to stop illegal sand extraction from the rivers by deploying executive magistrates. “They can quit if they can’t take actions,” it said.
The petition was filed by one Anwar Hossain on Sunday (Jun 16) seeking its order on the DC of Rajshahi to take steps to stop illegal sand extraction from Padma River at Talaimari.
In the petition, the petitioner also challenged the inaction of the DC in stopping illegal sand extraction from the river.
The court ordered Rajshahi DC to inform it by Jun 23 whether any step has been taken to stop the illegal sand extraction.
