Six Bangladeshi girls have returned home after serving two-and-a-half year jail terms in India.
Indian immigration police handed the girls over to Bangladesh at Petrapole, around 9:30pm on Monday, confirmed Benapole Immigration Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Bashar, reports UNB.
The returnees are: Morsida Begum, 21 and Rabeya Khatun, 23 from Gaibandha; Nishat Akhter Brishty, 20, of Bagerhat; plus Jessor's Kalpana Gazi, 25, Sathi Sarder, 22, and Rahima Khatun, 18.
ABM Muhit Hossain of NGO Justice and Care said the Bangladeshi girls were trafficked into India's Mumbai city, three years ago, with the promise of good employment. However, Mumbai police arrested them for entering the country illegally.
Later, they were sent to jail by a court. After serving their terms in prison, a shelter in Mumbai, called Navjeevan, kept them in their care before they returned home, he added.
