Six foreigners held over ATM fraud

The Detective Branch (DB) of police have arrested six Ukranian nationals from Dhaka's Hotel Olio Dream Heaven at Panthopath on Saturday (Jun 1).The Detective Branch (DB) of police have arrested six foreigners from a hotel in Dhaka over ATM fraud at a Dutch Bangla Bank booth.

The Ukranian nationals were arrested from Hotel Olio Dream Heaven at Panthopath on Saturday (Jun 1).

The detainees, Valentine (Passport number EY 051562), Oleg (Passport no Ex 089963), Dennis (passport number FL 019834) Nazari (passport number FT500501), Sergei (passport number FH424394) and Volobihain (Passport FT 379983) have been taken to DB’s Minto Road offices for further interrogation.

According to the police and bank sources, two foreign nationals withdrew Tk 300,000 from a Dutch Bangla Bank ATM booth and left some of the cash lying around on Friday (Jun 1).

The security at the booth informed the bank authorities who from the CCTV footage saw two men withdrawing the money but no account of that transaction has been recorded in the bank server.

The same men went to the booth to withdraw money on Saturday wearing masks and caps. The security got suspicious and called the locals who were able to catch one man while the other ran away.

The police raided the hotel based on the information provided by him and then made six more arrests.

A Dutch Bangla Bank employee said that the fraud ring had so far embezzled Tk 400,000 from the bank using technology so that no trace of the transaction remains in the bank server.

According to the police Additional Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Shahidur Rahman Ripon more than one member of the fraud ring is still on the run.

Sources from DB says that seven people came from Ukraine together. Among them Vitaly (passport number FE 804448) escaped when he learned about the operation but the immigration at the airport has been put on alert.
