A local leader of the ruling party’s student front Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Sylhet has been released on bail within an hour of his arrest on allegations of threatening an intern at Sylhet Women's Medical College Hospital (SWMC) with rape and murder.
Sarwar Hossain Chowdhury was arrested around 2:30am on Tuesday (May 14) from the city’s Court Point area at, said Sylhet Kotowali police OC Selim Mia.
Prior to the arrest, Sarwar, who serves as a vice-president for the BCL’s Dakhshin Surma Upazila Unit, appeared before the court and filed for bail.
Sylhet Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mostain Billah granted him bail after hearing the bail plea, said court official Ayub Ali.
OC Selim Mia told Bangla Tribune that police came to know about the bail after Sarwar’s arrest.
“After verifying the court documents, police released him around 3:15pm,” said the OC.
The arrest of Sarwar had been made hours after SWMC Director filed a case on Monday accusing him and several other unnamed people.
The same day, at a press briefing, the interns of the medical college gave an ultimatum that the accused be arrested within 24 hours.
On May 11, SWMC Registrar Ishfaq Zaman filed a general diary (GD) with the police station regarding the matter.
The GD reads that Sarwar threatened to rape and murder intern female doctor Nazifa Anjum Nishat.
A video of the incident went viral on social media, triggering interns to protest at the hospital and elsewhere in Sylhet.
