At a discussion on militancy, held at the National Press Club on Monday (Apr 29), head of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC), Monirul Islam, has said: “The militant threat has risen a little in Bangladesh after the attack in Sri Lanka but there’s no reason for alarm.”
He said: “We have come across a sense of vendetta in several people after the mosque attack in New Zealand and are working to counter the threat.
If we are alert then there won’t be any mishap, he stated emphatically.
Saying that radicalism rose in Bangladesh due to political patronage, he observed: “Those who are linked to radicalism are indoctrinated and brainwashed.”
There were several other attempts after Holey Artisan which did not succeed.
He asked the media to be careful in using certain words.
“Terms like Mujahid, Shahid and Jihad have religious connotation but militants are misusing these terms to give religious credence to their actions and this can have the wrong social impact.”
