Doctors at Gazipur’s Shahid Tajuddin Medical College Hospital said the body has three gunshot wounds on the left side of the chest.A shroud of confusions has arisen over the death of a suspected drug dealer, who the police claim was killed in a ‘shootout’ in Gazipur.
The victim, estimated to be in his 30s, allegedly died at the early hours of Friday during a drug raid conducted by the Detective Branch.
Officials identified as Kamrul Islam Kamu, the son of Tamij Uddin Khan from Tongi’s Ershadnagar. But it turned out that Kamu is in jail for the last two years.
“My husband is alive. He is at the Kashimpur jail (in Gazipur),” wife Jotsnya Begum told local reporters in Gazipur.
According to Jotsnya, her husband has been behind the bars for the last two years. “The last time we met was on May 20. I panicked after receiving phone calls from reporters on Friday (Jun 1) saying he was killed in a shootout. I went to the prison and found that he was there,” she said.
The prison authorities confirmed Jotsnya’s statement.
Superintendent Prashant Kumar Banik of Kashimpur Central Jail -2 said 32-year-old Kamrul Islam Kamu, son of Tamij Uddin Khan from Tongi’s Ershadnagar, is one of the inmates at their facility.
Following the gaffe, the Detective Branch later on Friday said that the victim was Kamal Khan alias Kamrul Islam alias Kamu, the son of one deceased Siraz Khan of Tongi’s Arichpur. But no one by that name and details was found in Arichpur.
Gazipur Detective Branch OC Amir Hossain claimed that Arichpur resident Kamu is accused in 14 cases including for two murders, robbery, extortion as well as narcotics charges in 14 cases filed in Gazipur, Dhaka and Narayanganj.
Tongi Police OC Kamal Hossain that one Kamu is named in several cases filed with them, including for a dual murder.
The body of Friday’s ‘shootout’ victim has been kept at the medical college hospital in Gazipur city.
“The body has three bullet wounds on the left side of the chest,” Resident Doctor Pranay Bhushan Das told Bangla Tribune.
