Rasel Sarkar (M) with his family members in the supreme court premises on Wednesday (Apr 10). Focus BanglaBus operator Green Line Paribahan has given Tk 500,000 to Rasel Sarkar, who lost a leg after one of the company’s buses ran over him in April last year.
The transport company’s owner Md Alauddin handed over the cheque at the High Court on Wednesday (Apr 10).
The High Court bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahsan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader has given the inter-district transport operator a month to pay the remaining Tk 4.5 million.
On Mar 31, a four-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain upheld a High Court order, directing Green Line Paribahan to pay Tk 5 million in compensation to Rasel Sarkar after hearing an appeal filed by Green Line.

The court ordered the respondent to pay the compensation to the victim by Apr 3.

In response, Bangladesh Bus Owners Association filed a writ petition on Tuesday with the Supreme Court, in an effort to evade compensating Rasel.

On Apr 28 last year, a luxury Green Line coach rear-ended the car Rasel was driving. The accident occurred on the slope of Mayor Md Hanif Flyover in Dholaipar, and caused Rasel to step outside of his car to assess the damage.

Although he signalled the bus not to drive away, the driver, in his attempt to flee the scene, ran over Rasel, severing his left leg from the thigh down in the process.

After being informed, police impounded the bus and detained the driver from near the National Press Club.
