A UK court has opened a trial against a Bangladeshi-origin man who murdered his wife and their two daughters 12 years ago.
Mohammed Abdul Shakur, 45, appeared at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court of Redbridge in north east London on Monday (Apr 8) charged with three counts of murder, reports Daily Mirror quoting a spokesman of the London Metropolitan Police.
According to police Shakur’s wife "Juli Begum, 26, was found dead with two minor daughters Anika and Thanha Khanum, aged five and six respectively, at their home in Whitechapel, in January 2007.
A concerned relative had alerted police, who found all three victims inside a bedroom. They had been strangled and beaten to death, police said.
Police discovered Thanha Khanum, six, dead from a head injury while five-year-old Anika Khanum had been strangled.
The police said at the time of the deaths that no forced entry took place at the address as they tried to trace Shakur.
However, Shakur was in India, where he has been imprisoned for immigration offences since 2012.
In 2013, UK authorities began extradition proceedings and have completed recently.
The man was extradited back to the UK from India on Saturday and was taken into custody and charged on Sunday.
"He will next appear at the Old Bailey on Wednesday (Apr 10),” said police.
