The female student wrapped in bandages at feni sadar hospital on Saturday (Apr 6, 2019). COURTESYDoctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) have said it will not be possible to shift a Feni madrasa student, who was set on fire, to Singapore for treatment.
“We talked with the doctors of the Singapore General Hospital via video conference. They told us that it is not possible to fly her,” English daily the Dhaka Tribune quoted Dr Samanta Lal Sen, chief coordinator of DMCH Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit, on Tuesday (Apr 9).
Samanta said, “They are advising us about her treatment. We are treating her based on their advice.”
“We are always in touch of them [the doctors in Singapore],” he added.
Earlier on Monday (Apr 8), Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina ordered for the female madrasa student to be shifted to Singapore for better treatment.
About the student’s physical condition, Dr Samanta said: “Her blood reports are a little bit better, but her condition has neither deteriorated nor improved.”
The female student was set on fire after she went to the Sonagazi Islamia Fazil (Degree) Madrasa on April 6 to sit for her Alim examinations, equivalent to Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) tests.
Four burqa-clad students called her to the roof and threatened her to withdraw a case her family previously filed against the institute’s Principal Sirajuddaula over an alleged rape attempt.
They set her on fire after pouring kerosene on her, when she refused, according to her family.
Police and others rescued her after hearing her cries for help and took her to Sonagazi Upazila Health complex, from where she was shifted to Feni General Hospital before being transferred to the DMCH.
On Monday morning, she was put on life support at DMCH’s burn unit after her condition deteriorated.
Doctors had earlier said her injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
