Waterlogged Dhaka streets even after small amounts of rain are a common scenario during monsoons.
But on Thursday, cars had to wade through waters on in city’s Maghbazar-Mouchak, Khilgaon and Mayor Hanif flyovers.
Blaming lack of maintenance, urban planning experts said clogged water poses a long-term risk to the infrastructure, which cost billions of taxpayers money.
According to them, flaws and not taking account of external factors while designing the flyovers have led to the situation.
Heavy rains and thundershowers in the morning crippled Dhaka as most roads in different parts of the city went under water.
It, however, came as a respite from the scorching heat over the last few days.
The Met office recorded 81 millimetre rainfall in three hours from 6am.
Several spots on the Maghbazar-Mouchak flyover were found inundated until early noon.
“I have worked as a chauffeur abroad, but never seen something like this,” Rajib Uddin, who had waded waters on the flyovers to travel from Malibagh to Rampura, told Bangla Tribune.
The Chankharpul end of the Mayor Hanif Flyover goes under even after small amounts of rain, according to local.
The same is for Khilgaon flyover.
“The policymakers are spending on visible developments, but there’s no fund for maintenance of the infrastructures,” said Shamsul Haque, a Civil Engineering professor at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
Describing the condition of Mayor Hanif Flyover as ‘dire’, he said, “After repeated calls, they installed rainwater pipes but it’s not connected to the drains on the ground.”
Clogged water severely damages concrete structures and can even cause to develop cracks, says Moazzem Hossain, the director of the Accident Research Institute at BUET.
“The rainwater pipes are clogged and the authorities must take responsibility for maintenance,” he told Bangla Tribune before adding that waterlogged flyovers can cause accidents.
Meanwhile, pictures and videos of vehicles wading through waters on flyover have gone viral on the social media.Facebook user Tahkik Khan wrote, “It’s hilarious but waterlogging has hit the Mogbazar flyover now.”
The flyover authorities claimed that it was the city corporation’s job to maintain it.
“We are aware of it. It’s a minor issue of clogged pipes and the city corporation is supposed to maintain it,” Sushanta Kumar Pal, director of Moghbazar-Mouchak Flyover Project, told Bangla Tribune.
Dhaka South City Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer Khan Md Bilal could not be reached over phone for a comment despite several attempts.
