The High Court (HC) has asked Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to submit a report before it on the unfit vehicles plying the streets across the country and drivers without valid licences.
The HC bench of justices Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and KM Hafizul Alam passed the order on a suo moto (voluntary) move on Wednesday (Mar 27) following a news published in a national English daily on Mar 23 under the headline: “No fitness docs, yet running”.
BRTA will have to submit the report before the court within Apr 30.
BRTA chairman, director of road safety wing, inspector general of police, and deputy commissioners of both Dhaka city corporations have been made respondents to the ruling.
The bench summoned Mahbubey Rabbani, director (Road Safety) of BRTA, to give his comment about unfit vehicles before the court on Apr 30.
The High Court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned of the government to explain why their failure to stop running of unfit vehicles should not be declared illegal.
The ruling comes a week after a Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) student, Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury, was killed when a Supravat Paribahan bus ran him over near Bashundhara residential area in Kuril on Feb 19.
