Describing the chemical warehouses in Old Dhaka as ‘time bombs’, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) chief Benazir Ahmed urged businesses to relocate those in a bid to avoid fatal fires, like the one at Chawkbazar on Feb20.
“The chemical warehouses in the Old Dhaka are like time bombs. We will not allow Dhaka to turn into a time bomb because of the careless of some people,” he said on Saturday (Mar 23) during a views exchange meeting at the Jail Convention Hall in Dhaka.
Adding that the government wants no flammable chemicals to be stored secretly in Old Dhaka, the RAB director general said: “You [the businessmen] will transfer the chemicals carefully. We do not want to see any more deaths.”
The RAB chief further said the drives against chemical warehouses and factories in Old Dhaka will continue, but no businessman would be penalized unjustly. “It is not our intention to put the businessmen in a difficult situation.
“We do not want to see another incident like the Nimtoli and Chawkbazar fires” he added.
