Bodies of eight more Old Dhaka fire victims handed over

The remains of victims of the Chawkbazar fire in Old Dhaka at the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. REUTERSEight of the eleven bodies, which were identified through DNA testing, of the Chawkbazar fire victims have been handed over to the families.

The district administration and police informed the families after the bodies were identified.

Members of the grieving families rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s morgue to collect the remains of their loved one on Wednesday (Mar 6) afternoon.

“The bodies have been handed over to the families, “ Chawkbazar police Sub Inspector Lokman Hossain told Bangla Tribune.

Among the victims, body of 19-year-old Tanzil Hasan Rohan, who was a BBA student at the North South University, were received by his parents Hasan Khan and Rubina Yasmin Rubi.

The body of Ahsan Ullah, 32, who worked in a leather factory, was claimed by his wife Kulsum. Ullah went to purchase some medicines on the day of the deadly fire, only to end up as a victim.

Nuruzzama, 40, another victim, was going through that road when the explosion occurred. His wife Shirin Begum received his body.

College student Fatema Tuz Zohra’s, 21, father Jashim Uddin received her body in the afternoon.

Saleh Ahmed, 38, who was on a rickshaw with his wife Nasrin Jahan, 32 and their 7-year-old son Aftahi Ahamed at the time of the fire, died after sustaining severe burn injuries. Bodies of his wife and son are yet to be identified. Jahan’s mother Kohinoor Begum and brother Ismail Hossain received the body from police.

Body of the victim Shahin Ahmed, 42, who hailed from Faridpur, was taken by his brother Akhter Hossain.

Enamul Hauqe’s, 33, body was also handed over to his families.

On Wednesday (Mar 6), CID’s Additional DIG Rejaul Haider told a press conference, “A total of 67 bodies have been recovered in the Feb 20 fire. Among them 19 bodies are yet to be identified.”

Until Mar 5, 48 DNA samples were collected from the victim’s relatives, said Haider before adding that 11 bodies were successfully identified following necessary tests.
