A fire at scrap dealers’ outlet in Old Dhaka has left three people hospitalised with burn injuries.
The incident was reported on Saturday (Feb 2) after from the Kamalbagh area, according to the fire department.
Soon after the fire erupted, locals rushed and put out the flames, Fire Service Lalbagh Zone Station Officer Ratan Kumar Debnath said.
It’s initially suspected that an explosion of a gas cyclone sparked the fire, he said before adding, “Firefighters found canisters on the site.”
Witnesses, however, said that the explosion triggered when expired spray canisters were being crushed at the scrap metal shop.
Three people— the son of the owner Sumon Khan, 35, and two staffers, Nure Alam, 32, and Mohammad Sumon, 30 — have been taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital from the scene, said police.
“Sumon Khan suffered 26 percent burns while Nure Alam 30 percent and Md Sumon 16 percent,” Inspector Bachchu Mia of the DMCH police camp said quoting doctors at the burns unit.
