Supreme Court of BangladeshAround 80 defeated candidates of the 11 national parliamentary election lodged cases at the tribunal on grounds of rigging, votes cast by dead people, mistreatment of agents and other issues.
The case lodgers include candidates from BNP, Oikyo Front and Progressive Democratic Party.
Lawyer for the candidates, Ruhul Kuddus Kajal, says: “in these cases, we have challenged the electoral process of those who emerged victorious.”
The case papers document a wide range of corruption and irregularities, including names of people who faced mistreatment.
The complains include: prevention from election campaigning, unwillingness from the law enforcers plus returning officers to provide help on election day to prevent irregularities, attack on BNP candidates by Awami League supporting groups, creating of an atmosphere of terror by AL supporters and filling of ballot boxes before the election etc.
Another lawyer for those who lodged the case, barrister AKM Ehsanur Rahman, told Bangla Tribune: “the breach of rules and regulations in the December 30 election will be placed before the court.”
Another lawyer says that there is evidence that votes were cast in the names of dead people.
Lawyer Sagir Hossain Leon, says: “we have appealed to have the result of victorious candidates declared illegal.”
