Professor Dr. Kamrul Hasan KhanPeople need to be aware of the radiation of nuclear weapons. It has some health effects. If the bomb explodes in some places, people may be affected differently. Apart from death, cancer, disability, infertility will be the worst effects of nuclear weapons. On the other hand, those who are working on it are in various physical risks. Considering the facts I want to work on nuclear weapons in future. Nuclear weapons will be used for the betterment of the health of people in different sections of medical science and we should think those things from now. This year, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) won the Nobel Prize in peace and Professor Dr Kamrul Hasan Khan expressed his feelings to the Bangla Tribune through his words. He, at the same time, is the Vice President of ICAN and President of PSR (Physician for Social Responsibility) and vice-chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.
In fact, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize this year, is a coalition of organizations to abolish nuclear weapons. This alliance works in 101 countries. Two Bangladeshi organizations - Center for Bangladesh Studies (Bangladesh Adhayan Kendra) and Physicians for Social Responsibility – are the members of ICAN. On Saturday (October 7th), ICAN’s Vice-President Professor Dr Kamrul Hasan Khan interviewed the Bangla Tribune. He said, 'we want to stop war’. Our responsibility increased after The ICAN won the Nobel Prize.
Dr Kamrul Islam said, there is unrest in the whole world. Those who are working for peace will be encouraged in this award. People will be more involved in peace because, except few people of the world, everyone wants peace. ICAN wants to unite civil society, especially those who work for humanity.'
‘ICAN is a program of IPPNW’, he added. It has worked as a separate project. ICAN has always played an important role in the nuclear movement. Naturally, I'm very happy with this award of ICAN.’
He said, ‘Last year the Regional Conference of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) was organized in Dhaka. We are working to make people aware of nuclear weapons, people should be aware of this issue.’ If there is a bomb blast in the neighbouring country, its effects will be in Dhaka. So, it will be massive killing. So, these weapons should not be used on this earth. Use of Nuclear weapons is anti-human and anti-civilization. We have our movement all over the world. We get more pleasure when we heard that another separate program of the same organization got the Nobel Prize.
‘What kind of work the ‘Physicians for Social Responsibility’ do, many people want to know the things. This organization organizes all kinds of anti-war programs. We work with all kinds of weapons with small arms trafficking. As well as we are working for the improvement of health services in Bangladesh. PSR is working on the patient-doctor relationship, health budget and health issues of the workers’, he added.
