The High Court has scrapped the bail plea of Mahbubul Haque Chisty, one of the entrepreneur of Farmers Bank and former chairman of the Bank’s audit committee, in a graft case filed for embezzling over Tk 900,000 of the bank funds for his personal expenses.
The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam gave the order on Wednesday (Jan 30) after hearing the plea.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, Additional Attorney General Murad Reza, Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik, Assistant Attorney General Helena Begum Chaina moved for the state while Advocate Md Khurshid Alam Khan moved for the ACC while Barrister Shafik Ahmed and Barrister Mahbub Shafiq moved for Chisty.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case with Gulshan Police Station on Aug 8, 2018 against Chisty on charge of spending Tk 924,673 from the bank funds for travelling to London and Arab Emirates from Aug 19 to Aug 28 last ignoring the bank rule and regulations.
Following his bail petition, the HC on Nov 19, 2018 had issued a rule asking the government and ACC to explain why Chisty should not be granted bail in the case.
The HC concluded the hearing on the rule on Tuesday (Jan 29) and fixed on Wednesday (Jan 30) to pass the order.
The anti-graft body arrested Chisty from Dhaka’s Segunbagicha area on Apr 10, 2018.
