Twenty-three organizations at the Dhaka International Trade Fair have been sued under the VAT Act by for evading the tax.
Deputy Commissioner Ferdousi Mahbub of Dhaka South VAT Commission filed cases against these organizations on Monday (Jan 28) during an inspection.
Mahbub said on Tuesday (Jan 29) that a VAT Commission team inspected the trade fair and found irregularities in some stalls.
They discovered that some stalls were charging the customers taxes but were not turning it over to the state treasury while some were selling goods without the VAT receipt.
She said that the tax amount was being calculated and the organizations will be fined in addition to collecting the amount.
The stalls are: Kiam Metal Industries Ltd, Delhi Aluminium, Navana Furniture, Nabisco Biscuit and Bread Ltd, Hajir Biryani, Smart Zone, Royelex Metal Industries Ltd, FG Jewellery, Desh Collection, Messrs Shahjahan Store, The Pearl House, Zeeshan Collection, Kamal Enterprise, Naseer Abedin Traders, Ashraf and Brothers, Nida Trading, Grihini Biryani and Kabab, Hashem Foods Ltd, Miyako, Lovello Ice cream, SKB Stainless Steel Mills Ltd, Hajir Biryani and Shahi Kosturi Kabab, Bengal Melamine Ltd, Brothers Furniture Ltd and Fashion Jewellery.
There are around 518 VAT eligible stalls and pavilions at the fair this year and the government is expecting a turnover of Tk 60 million from it.
