RMG workers take to the streets for a third day demanding minimum wages on Tuesday (Jan 8).RMG workers have been continuing their protests for the third consecutive day in the capital demanding an increase in the minimum wage and a set of other demands.
Garment workers began to gather at Uttara, Dakhinkhan and Kalshi area in Mirpur since Tuesday (Jan 8) morning.
When police reached the scene at the Mirpur’s Kalshi area where garment workers occupied the road in front of a 22-storied building, a confrontation ensued. Later, police allowed them to stay on the road.
Khadiza Akhter, a RMG worker told Bangla Tribune that the minimum pay structure was announced in the December last when our demands were not reflected. There are huge discrimination in the wage between operators and the helpers. We demand fair wages.
“The owners are not eager to implement the government’s order and we are suffering much for that,” she alleged.
“Extra police force have been deployed in the area,” Pallabi police OC Narrul Islam told Bangla Tribune.
Garment workers have been protesting since Sunday (Jan 6) to demand the government implement the new wage structure it has declared for the sector, including the minimum wage.
They claim that garment owners are not paying them according to the new wage structure and that they have instead become the victims of various forms of injustice.
