The High Court has given orders to not arrest Rafiqul Alam Majnu, who is running on a BNP ticket from the Feni-1 seat, from court premises.
The bench of Justice Muhammad Abdul Hafiz and Justice Mohi Uddin Shamim gave the orders on Sunday (Dec 2).
Rafiqul Alam, who will be contesting the polls in the Feni-1 constituency instead of the party Chief Khaleda Zia, moved the court seeking bail in 22 different cases filed against him.
“Although his bail appeals were on the cause list of the court, the hearing did not take place,” said his counsel Masud Rana. “Hence the court gave a verbal order to not arrest him until the hearing on all 22 of his appeals is complete”.
He also said that the hearing for the bail pleas has been set on Monday (Nov 3).
The BNP leader stands accused of holding secret meetings, obstruction of police duty among many other things.
On Sunday (Dec 2), returning officers rejected all three of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s nomination for the Feni-1, Bogra-6 and 7 constituencies on the grounds of an HC order that a person sentenced to more than two years will be ineligible to take part in the election.
