HC grants bail to BNP leader Rafiqul Islam Mia. FILE PHOTOSenior BNP leader Rafiqul Islam Mia has secured bail from the High Court, after challenging the trial court’s three-year jail term in Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) for not filing his asset details.
On Monday (Nov 26), the High Court also stayed the financial penalty slapped on him by the trial court.
On Nov 20, a Dhaka special judge’s court convicted Mia, a member of the BNP’s National Standing Committee, in his absence.
He was also fined by Tk 50,000, failing to pay which will cause another three months in jail.
Hours after the same day, the Detective Branch arrested Mia from his Eskaton home to produce him before the court next day, which sent him to jail.
In April 2004, the ACC served Mia with a notice to file his wealth statement. In September the same year, a case was started with the police and charges were pressed in November.
The trial kicked-off in November 2017 after the court indicted Mia.
