Prosecution will appeal seeking death for Tarique
The prosecution in the Aug 21 grenade attack cases said they will move the High Court seeking death penalties for acting BNP chief Tarique Rahman and others who masterminded the 2004 attack on Awami League rally.
On Wednesday, the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal ordered life in prison for Tarique and 18 others.
Nineteen others, including former BNP state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar and former deputy minister Abdus Salam Pintu have been sentenced to death.
“We expected capital punishment for Tarique Rahman and the other conspirators. We will move the higher court after going through the full verdict,” Prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kajal told the media after the verdict was announced.
The Bangabandu along with most of his family members were assassinated on Aug 15 1975, he said before adding, “The same way, Tarique Rahman, Mufti Hannan, Maulana Tajuddin, Abdus Salam Pintu conspired to assassinate Sheikh Hasina.”
Prosecutor Syed Rezaqur Rahman said that they had been able to prove all the charges beyond doubt. “We expected the maximum punishment.”
Responding to a query from the media, prosecutor Yousuf Hossain Humayun said, “The court has analysed all the evidences and testimonies before delivering its verdict. We express our satisfaction.”
