The picture of then BCL leaders Sabbir Hossain and Ashiqur Rahman brandishing guns appeared in the media.Police have brought charges of attempted murder against the two former leaders of the ruling Awami League’s student wing for opening fire from handguns during an eviction drive to remove street-vendors in Dhaka in 2016.
The chargesheet in a case started by police was submitted to the court on Wednesday, said Shahbag police station’s Registration Officer Mahmudul Hasan.
“Sub Inspector Akram Hossain filed it to the court on Apr 11 and the court accepted it on Sunday,” he told Bangla Tribune.
On Oct 27, 2016, a clash broke out between street-vendors and Dhaka South City Corporation employees during an eviction drive.
In the course of the violence, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders Sabbir Hossain and Ashiqur Rahman were seen firing in the air with guns.
Sabbir was general secretary of the BCL's Dhaka metro (South) unit, while Ashiqur was general secretary of the Wari unit in Dhaka.
The picture of the two brandishing guns appeared in the media the next day, after which the BCL expelled the duo from the organisation.
The Shahbag police started a case against the two, after which they surrendered to the court and secured bail.
Sabbir and Ashiqur appeared in court on Sunday, when their bail was extended.
