The Council for the Preservation of Bangladesh General Students’ Rights, a platform of students and job-seekers, had been demonstrating demanding reforms to quotas in public service.
An official reaction will come at a media briefing on the Dhaka University campus Monday afternoon, said the platform’s leaders.
“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told the parliament that there will no quotas, only special arrangements for the disabled and the ethnic minority. We find the government-formed panel’s recommendation positive, but our protests will continue until the official order is issued,” the Council’s Convener Hasan Al Mamum told Bangla Tribune.
Joint Convener Ben Yamen Mollah echoed, but added, “That the student protest will only end after false charges against quota reformist leaders will be dropped.”
On Jul 2, the government formed a seven-member committee led by the cabinet secretary following an announcement of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
On Apr 11, Hasina announced to abolish quotas in government jobs following a three-day of demonstrations, which brought capital Dhaka to its knees.
The panel filed its report on Monday where it suggested abolishing quota system for first and second-class government jobs.
Cabinet Secretary Md Shafiul Alam handed the report to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during the cabinet meeting.
Currently, about 56% of government jobs are reserved for candidates from various quotas.
