Titumir College student Razib Hossain, who lost an arm in a bus accident, is yet to be out of danger and has to undergo more surgeries, says the doctor in charge of his treatment.
“His condition is still critical. Another two to three surgeries will be done. He has also suffered injuries in his head” Shamsuzzaman Shahin, the chief of the seven-strong board formed by the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, told Bangla Tribune on Thursday.
On Tuesday, Razib was on his way to college from his Jatrabari home when the accident took place at the capital’s Karwan Bazar.
Police said he was on a BRTC-operated double-decker bus, which was standing at the traffic signal near the fountain at the intersection. When a Swajan Paribahan bus tried to make its way through, Razib’s arm was sandwiched between the buses.
He was rushed to the Shamorita Hospital, where he underwent a surgery and transferred to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) the next day.
The government will bear all the expenses for the treatment of the 22-year-old, Health Minister Mohammad Nasim told the media at the DMCH on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the High Court has ordered the state-owned BRTC and private bus operator to bear the cost of treatment of Razib.
After hearing a petition on Wednesday, it also issued a rule asking why the bus companies should not be ordered to pay the victim Tk 10 million in damages.
The rule also asked why the court should not instruct the strict enforcement of pedestrian safety laws, amendment of laws to prevent similar incidents in the future and the issuing of new regulations on the matter.
The home secretary, road transport secretary, inspector general of police, Dhaka metro police commissioner and four other officials have been told to respond by four weeks.
