BNP Chief Khaleda Zia was produced in the makeshift court inside the old jailhouse premises against her will, claims her counsel Joynal Abedin.
According to him, the government violated the constitution by setting up the court inside the facility at Old Dhaka’s Najimuddin Road.
“A court was suddenly set up inside the prison with the sole purpose to try the BNP Chairperson,” He told media on Wednesday.
“There cannot be any such court according the Constitution”, he said citing the charter’s Section 35 stipulates that a defendant has the right to a public trial.
Abedin said, “There is no precedence of this in the history of Bangladesh, not even in the history of Pakistan.”
“If we are under military dictatorship then, the regime can do whatever they want,” he added.
Alleging that the the ruling regime do not abide by the constitution Abedin said, “This government has issued a gadget notification illegally to set up a court in jailhouse to prosecute physically ill Khaleda Zia.”
“They set up a court in a 24 feet by 26 feet dark chamber where she was brought in a wheelchair by force”, Abedin said.
