Family members have urged the government and the jail authorities to provide immediate medical treatment to renowned photographer Shahidul Alam.
Shahidul Alam was arrested in a case filed under Section 57 of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act on Aug 5 night, few hours after he had given an interview to Qatar-based television channel Al Jazeera on the student protests for road safety.
Shahidul Alam’s wife Rahnuma Ahmed and his colleague and journalist Saydia Gulrukh appealed to the government, more specifically the jail authorities in a statement after visiting Shahidul at Keraniganj Central Jail on Wednesday on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.
In the statement, they said Shahidul Alam is suffering from breathing difficulties, has pain in the jaw and gums and is facing eyesight problems. Shahidul did not have any such health-related complaints before he was taken into police custody on the night of Aug 5, 2018.
Shahidul has been imprisoned for 10 days since 12 August, when he was taken there after being produced before the Magistrate, and following 6 days in remand in the custody of the Detective Branch of the Police, the statement read.
“We appeal to the government and more specifically, the Jail authorities to ensure immediate medical attention for Dr Shahidul Alam by transfering him to a hospital,” they said in the statement.
