The cabinet finally approved the ‘Road Transport Act-2018’ in a bid to ensure discipline on the roads.
The approval came in the regular meeting of the cabinet held in the chairmanship of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday at the secretariat.
A point system has been introduced in the license of the motor vehicle drivers in accordance to world's most advanced road transport system which is followed in developed countries.
The system is targeted to cancel license gradually for wrongdoings by a motor vehicle driver while driving on the road, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam told reporters after the meeting.
“Under section 11 of the new law, the drivers will be given 12 points in the driving license; an incident of violation of law will cut one point”, he said.
Points will decrease gradually to zero in such a way when the driver's license will be automatically cancelled, the cabinet secretary added.
The move came shortly after two students were killed by a speeding bus which was on a race with another for passengers on Airport road on Jul 29.
Following the incident, a huge surge of students raised against the reckless driving and protestations for safe roads.
