The Brexit will not affect the long and deep relationship between the United Kingdom (UK) and Bangladesh, says British High Commissioner in Dhaka Robert Chatterton Dickson.
In a statement issued on Thursday (Jan 30), Dickson said, "On Jan 31 the United Kingdom leaves the European Union... The UK and Bangladesh have a long and deep relationship which pre-dated our joining of the EU. Our departure from the EU will not affect this."
The British envoy said they "leave as one United Kingdom, free to determine our own future and form partnerships with old allies and new friends around the world... If anything it is a reminder of the depth and breadth of our global relations and people-to-people bonds we share.
"Our departure from the EU also demands that we engage with allies and friends like Bangladesh with renewed vigour based on our bilateral interests which span so many key areas including development cooperation, trade, health, education, defense climate change and so much more," he added.
Dickson further said "The people and country of Bangladesh can look forward to a continued deep relationship built on our shared heritage, values and people relations.
"Moreover, Bangladesh can continue to rely on the UK as an ally in addressing some of the major challenges we both face,” he added.
