Cox's Bazar declared 'expensive city'

FILE PHOTOPublic servants working in the beach resort town of Cox's Bazar will now get allowances on the same scale as in metropolitans as the government has declared it an 'expensive city'.
The official order by Cabinet Division, announcing the district town and the municipal area as expensive, was issued on Monday (Jan 27).
It said the move came after taking account the living cost, transport cost, food and daily staples and that it would be immediately effective.
According to sources at the Cabinet Division, the divisional headquarters except for Mymensingh, Savar municipality, Narayanganj district and the Gazipur City Corporation are defined as 'expensive area'.
Benefits in the pay structure in public service differ based on the region. House rents for government officials in Dhaka and Chattogram higher than in other districts. The allowances for transport, food and clothing also differ.
The latest order will enable the government officials in Cox’s Bazar to receive extra allowances.
