Nearly 70 foreign observers in Dhaka city polls

As many as 67 foreign observers from seven countries and European Union are set to monitor the upcoming Dhaka city polls, slated for Feb 1.
According to the Election Commission (EC) officials, maximum six observers will be coming from the USA, followed by twelve from the United Kingdom and five from Switzerland and the Netherlands each.
There will be five observers from Japan and the EU each while four will come from Norway and two from Denmark, the EC officials said.
According to EC sources, most of the foreign observers already collected their accreditations from the EC till Thursday (Jan 28).
Besides, the Election Commission approved a total of 1,013 local observers from 22 organizations to oversee the polls.
Of them, 457 observers will be in Dhaka South City Corporation and 503 in Dhaka North City Corporation with another 53 will monitor the elections centrally.
Local organizations those are given clearance to overseen the polls include Jatiya Nirbachon Parjobekkhon Parishadon (JANIPOP), SAARC Human Rights Foundation, Forum for Development Association, Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), Institute for Environment and Development, and COAST Trust.
Voting to the two Dhaka city corporations will be held on Feb 1 from 8am to 4pm without any break.
As many as 3,0090,00 voters will cast ballots at 1,318 polling stations in Dhaka North while 2,452,000 voters at 1,150 stations in Dhaka South city.
