On Jan 27 in 1972, Eid ul Azha was observed. And it had special significance since it was Eid in a free country. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman said while talking to foreign media AFP that Pakistan has to recognize Bangladesh and future relations between the two countries rely on this.
Re-establishing ties between Pakistan and Bangladesh would be harder that re-establishment of relations between Germany and France after World War II.
On Eid day, there was jubilation and celebration everywhere and Bangabandhu joined the prayers at the Dhanmondi mosque. Bangabandhu however refused to make any comment about Zulfiquer Ali Bhutto becoming prime minister in Pakistan.
“Once Pakistan recognizes our sovereignty we can develop bilateral relations,” said Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
During this time, the tortured women were given sanctuary at hospitals with promises of confidentiality. All throughout January, mass graves were being unearthed.
In Khulna, behind the rail station, a mass grave was found filled with skeletons.
