General view of the court during the ruling in a case filed by Gambia against Myanmar alleging genocide against the minority Muslim Rohingya population, at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands January 23, 2020. REUTERSExperts have described the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) order on Myanmar to take measures to protect Rohingyas ‘logical’.
Earlier in the day, in a unanimous ruling by a panel of 17 judges, the top UN court, based on The Hague, ordered on Myanmar to take urgent measures to protect its Muslim Rohingya population from persecution and atrocities, and preserve evidence of alleged crimes against them.
Appreciating the provisional order, former foreign secretary M Shahidul Haque said, “The court has taken a logical decision.
The government of Bangladesh is on the right track on the Rohingya issues, said Haque adding: “Today’s ruling is an important step [for the future].”
Prof Mizanur Rhaman said the ICJ order “broadens the ways to ensure accountability” to Myanmar for the persecution of Rohingyas.
“Myanmar’s counsel tried to take the case in different ways to fool the international community but they failed,” Rahman added.
