Stringent security for New Year celebration: Minister

Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal speaks at a programme in Dhaka on Friday (Jun 28).Stringent security measures have been taken ahead of the New Year celebration and to avoid untoward incidents, says Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan.
"There is no specific threat centering the New Year celebration," he told the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Crime Reporters’ Association of Bangladesh in Dhaka on Monday (Dec 30).
Khan said police can face any kind of challenges as they are now more capable and efficient.
"The government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working relentlessly with a firm resolve to establish a crime and militancy-free society,” he was quoted by BSS as saying.
Khan said no musical events would be allowed in open places on the occasion of 31st night celebration. “Our law enforcement agencies have remained alert to face any situation."
The minister said the government has banned musical activities including fireworks in the open sky after 6pm from Dec 31 to Jan 1. Besides, all bars will remain closed at night from Dec 30 to Jan 1 till 6pm.
Besides, carrying all kinds of arms will also be prohibited during the time and stern action will be taken if anyone tries to create anarchy centering the Dec 31 night, he added.
Speaking at the function, Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Benazir Ahmed said RAB members would patrol in Dhaka’s important areas moreover, security measures will be intensified in the diplomatic areas in the city including Baridhara and Gulshan on the occasion of New Year celebration.
“RAB members will ensure security for peaceful celebration of the night but none will be allowed to cross limits,” he was quoted by BSS as saying.
Benazir urged all, especially the journalists to remain alert about rumours or fake news on social media.
